SUPER: "What do you create?"

VO (Interviewer): What do you create?

VO (Eddie Opara): I've never had anybody ask me that question.

SUPER: PANTONE® Presents

VO (Eddie Opara): Umm...thanks a lot for that.

SUPER: 112 New PANTONE® Colors for Graphic Design

SUPER: New Colors, New Enlightenment Eddie Opara on PANTONE

VO (Eddie Opara): That's a...I got it, actually. (Laughter) Initially I designed because I was told to. As a kid, the first think I ever designed was a logo for my Mum's association. She was my first client. She was my first argument. She was also the first time I actually quit a client. I loved working the abstract. That to me is very sort of, um, forthright. Truthful, a fundamental thing for me is whether or not I see this sort of kernal of what I initially conceived in that. If I don't, then I know it's not my creation. Any time you see new colors, you're sort of enlightened to utilize them in a brave, new way. The PANTONE Book is quintessential. It's a book that when you open it, you can see what you've loved. It has a past, it has this sense of history. That's the reason why Pantone is perfect. It allows people like myself to reproduce that color again and again and again without compromise. It's always good to have new perspectives. There's so much poetry within color and how can one determine the sense of difference. We need to have diversity. New Pantone. New enlightenment.

TRANSCRIPT

VO (Jessica Walsh): When I was a kid when my dad would come back from business trips, he'd always bring me a box of fifty different colored crayons and I loved playing with them and combining all the colors, but it never felt like enough. I always wanted more color.

SUPER: Pantone® Presents

SUPER: 112 New PANTONE® Colors for Graphic Design

SUPER: New Colors, New Emotion. Jessica Walsh on PANTONE

VO (Jessica Walsh): Color can bring so much personality to whatever you're doing and can also evoke emotion. I remember one of my first projects when I was a student, I was so excited about it, it had a lot of bold, poppy colors in it and I went to print it out and it looked washed out and grey. That was just my first big lesson that what you see on the screen is not what you're going to get when it's printed. So it was then that I quickly learned that you have to use the PANTONE Books and I think the COLOR BRIDGE is great for that because you can make sure that the HEX values that you're seeing on web translate to the RGB, translate to the CMYK and you're getting the same consistency from print to digital. One of the goals in my own work is to evoke emotion from someone whether it's to make someone smile or make someone think about things a different way or even cause them to be shocked, and color's a really great tool in...in doing that. I think inspiration comes from everything we've experienced or learned or every conversation we had or dreams that we've had. I think any of those things can spark an idea. All those experiences we've had in life are so valuable.
