U.S. Patent Office Awards Hexachrome®† Patent to Pantone

Carlstadt, New Jersey, May 26, 1998 Pantone, Inc. today announced that Hexachrome, the recognized standard for six-color process printing, was awarded patent number 5,734,800 by the U.S. Patent Office. Hexachrome dramatically increases the range of colors that can be printed using conventional printing presses and significantly improves the realism and vividness of full color reproduction. The awarding of the patent for Hexachrome reinforces the importance and significance of this advanced printing process.

"Since its introduction in May of 1995, Hexachrome has been increasingly viewed as one of the most significant developments in printing in the last ten years," said Richard Herbert, senior vice president of Pantone. "The recognized standard for high fidelity printing today, the technology is being used with incredible results in practical applications such as packaging, publishing and corporate brochures accurately reproducing bright, brilliant colors as well as subtle pastels."

Leading industry vendors such as Quark and Adobe support the standard in every aspect of the design, prepress and printing workflow. Hexachrome projects have ranged from packaging, product labels and book covers to posters and annual reports. In January 1998, a San Francisco-based printer ran the first web offset catalog in Hexachrome, making the standard a viable option for catalog production.

In a single pass on a six-color press, Hexachrome is capable of simulating over 90% of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM® Colors, almost twice the number that can be obtained using conventional four-color process printing. Hexachrome is a fully integrated six-color process which includes a custom ink set, design tools, separations, proofing and the PANTONE Hexachrome®† Color Selector. The proprietary color set of the PANTONE Hexachrome Color System consists of color enhanced PANTONE Hexachrome CMYK plus PANTONE Hexachrome Orange and PANTONE Hexachrome Green.

Pantone, Inc., the leading global source of products for the selection and accurate communication of color, is the developer of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM, the PANTONE Process Color System® and PANTONE Hexachrome, a six-color ultra high quality process system. These three distinct global languages for color specification and reproduction have been widely accepted and utilized by designers and printers and are currently in use in almost 100 countries throughout the world. Pantone, Inc. is an ISO 9002 registered company.
